ULI Debra Stein Graduate Student Fellowship

In honor of her legacy ULI San Francisco has established the Debra Stein “YIMBY” (Yes In My Back Yard) Graduate Student Fellowship to support promising young women in their pursuit of responsible land use and urban development.  Our hope is to provide these students with unmatched access to both professional networks and to knowledge of best practices in urban development – while seeding the next generation of female leadership in our field.  The Fellowship represents Debra’s ideals of education, mentoring, responsible urban development, and women’s advancement.

The Graduate Student Fellowship Program provides the highest level exposure to the ULI experience for exemplary female graduate students in land-use related fields, while seeding ULI with tomorrow’s industry leaders.  This fellowship is offered to female students only in an effort to increase the visibility of women in a historically male dominated industry. Through this program, students will be provided with a passport to participate in ULI events and educational activities at a very formative point in their careers.

One female student pursuing a graduate degree in a land use-related field will be selected each year for a two-year appointment, starting in their final year of study, by the Graduate Student Fellowship Selection Committee.

Fellowship Details:

In addition to receiving the opportunity to be integrated into the vast ULI network of real estate professionals, all Graduate Student Fellows receive the following benefits:

• Two-year ULI Full Membership with all rights and privileges thereof.
• Registration to attend ULI semi-annual meetings—Spring Council Forum and the Fall Meeting (including tickets for events)—for two years.
• Travel and lodging allowance to the Spring Council Forum and Fall Meeting.
• Admission to a Product Council and its meetings and functions (including Council reception/dinner at the Spring Council Forum and Fall Meeting) for two years.
• Admission to all local District Council events for two years.
• A seasoned ULI leader as a mentor for two years, based on student’s interest area.
• A copy of all Debra Stein’s publications
• Orientation to ULI and on-going Fellowship management by ULI San Francisco District Council staff.

Selection Criteria:

Graduate Student Fellows must have:

• Female graduate student in good standing entering their final year in a land use-related field, including: real estate, city planning, urban design, political management, finance, economics, government, law, civil engineering or related majors.
• Indication of commitment to YIMBY (Yes In My Back Yard, pro-responsible growth) work.
• Leadership potential in the field of urban development.

Application Requirements:

• A current resume
• An unofficial university transcript for graduate work from their respective institution.
• Two letters of recommendation:  one from a professor at their institution and a second from a professional or personal reference. 
• A completed Application Form
• Two (2) of the following three (3) essay questions answered. Essays should be no more than one page in length. 

1. Why is a ULI Fellowship Important to you?

2. In your opinion, what is the greatest challenge that your generation of land use-related professionals will face in the future?  What are your ideas for overcoming those issues?

3. Professionally, where do you see yourself in 5 years?

The Selection Committee, made up of colleagues of Debra’s in the real estate field, will make its decision based on the applications submitted.  The Selection Committee may request finalist be available for a 30 minute interview or phone interview.  Selected Fellows should be prepared to attend the Spring Conference in Boston, Massachusetts from April 14 – 16, 2010.  All expenses will be paid by the Fellowship.  Any questions can be directed to Cathy Garza at cathy_garza@haas.berkeley.edu
